Sparta Rotterdam organized a meeting on equal opportunities for young people in Rotterdam. The lunch was organized by Sparta Rotterdam, Stichting De Betrokken Spartaan and Wooning. For the first time, the normally inaccessible middle strip of the stadium was used for a social meeting. The initiative was taken because of the challenges that many young people in Rotterdam face. According to CBS figures, almost 1 in 5 children in Rotterdam grow up in poverty. For many families, sport, social contacts and personal development are not self-evident. By organizing the lunch literally on the middle strip, the initiators wanted to create a place where different parties could discuss the role that sport can play in increasing opportunities for young people. Demelza Dumfries, co-founder of DUCE (Dumfries Unlimited Care & Education), was present and found the initiative very nice. Michael Marinus of Stichting De Betrokken Spartaan spoke about the development of young people and the role that sport can play. Amir, an example of what is possible when young people get opportunities to develop themselves, was also present. In addition to awareness, the establishment of connections between organizations was central. At the table, conversations arose between parties that do not always meet in everyday practice, but do work on comparable social issues. Michael Zijlaard, director of Rotterdam Topsport, spoke about the role that sport can play in increasing opportunities for young people.
